A Beautiful Day at Woolaroc Part 1

This will be part 1 of an unknown number part series on our trip to Woolaroc. There are so many pictures to share I decided to break them up, but it probably won't be until I finish the last part that I'll know exactly how many parts there will be.

Saturday we kicked off spring break in style. We began the day by sleeping in. The whole family got up around 8:30 and Casey made a huge Saturday morning style breakfast....pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast (with "jel-wee" of course). After breakfast there was Mickey Mouse Clubhouse for Gabe while Casey and I got around to head out to Woolaroc.

You might remember my weak post about Woolaroc from back in December when we made the trip out and I forgot my camera. If you don't remember, and you'd like to read it you can click here to do that.

Our main reason for going to Woolaroc was because of a Humanities assignment Casey had. He needed to visit a museum and choose one artifact to write a paper on. Woolaroc was a great choice for us because it's close to where we live (just a fifteen minute drive west), has live animals, and most of the exhibits are completely encased behind glass displays making the museum fairly toddler proof. Admittance is only $8 per adult and children under 11 get in free. For all that is has to offer I think it's a pretty fair price.

When you arrive at Woolaroc you make a beautiful winding drive through creek bottoms and pastures of buffalo, deer, elk, and a few other random animals like an ostrich, an emu, some llamas, a cow with huge horns, and a zebra/horse (zorse?). There's a small area up front that fences off the ranch from the road and we stopped to see the elk up close and personal. The elk weren't too thrilled about that. After you cross the cattle guard into the ranch there are signs everywhere that tell you to stay in the car. We only broke the rule a couple of times. And, I made sure we weren't near any animal large enough to do damage.

Gabe loved the ride back to the museum property. We allowed him to sit up front with Casey so he could have the best view and Gabe was thrilled about the prospect of "driving". The animals stayed pretty far off the road, but Gabe loved it anyway. He was very excited to see the animals and he's still talking about them and going to "Uhl-a-rock" (woolaroc).

Here are some photos from the first leg of our trip to Woolaroc.

Woolaroc!

Not so sure about the "magic" part.
It's nothing like Disney World.

Although he couldn't care less!

Casey was somewhat equally enthused.

Gee, do you think running at the elk might spook them?

Yeah, it does.

Good news.
The fence was not electric.

He was so into the animals.

"What's that?"

A big spooked herd...that's what.

"Bye, deer!" he says.

Ain't he a big boy now?

Waving like he's some kind of grand marshall.

That is his purely enjoying himself look.

Oh, and tractors too?!
He's thinking...can this day get any better??

It appears that the buffalo were corralled, but the gates were open.

Aren't they big beautiful beasts?

I think we know how this is going to go...

That little deer made good time getting away.

"Deer! Deer, Daddy!"

Sorry boys, they're protected.

Any guesses on what this is?
Besides the obvious answer.

There's that pesky sign.

He's not one bit concerned.

This shot is for Charlie.

The grass is apparently greener on the other side.

This was only the second time we broke the "stay in car" rule.

And, now family and friends, I have come to the end of my first Woolaroc post. Don't fret! More to come tomorrow!
