Originally, I thought about getting a hotel room in Kansas City near Legends...one with a pool so the boys could swim. After looking at the cost of a hotel and figuring in the gas for the drive we decided on the much more budget friendly (AND MORE FUN!) option of tent camping at nearby Lake Pomona.
BEST decision! After the initial fight it out over the erecting of the tent we had a perfectly good time. Gabe asked repeatedly if we could move to the lake and make it our new home. We had hoped to swim and fish while we were there, but we only stayed one night and it was super windy so we didn't partake in either of those activities. And, yet Gabe still thought it was the best time ever. He enjoyed playing in the tent, jumping on the "bed" (air mattress), roasting hotdogs and marshmallows, and just chilling. Barrett and I were fighting nasty colds, so we weren't feeling great, but the beautiful weather (after the wind died down), and the laid back way of camping life made it a sweet celebration in spite of the colds.
I was concerned about how Barrett would do sleeping in the great outdoors and concerned for his safety around the fire, but it all worked out. We took his pac n play to sleep in, so I'm sure he felt right at home sleeping. As far as the fire goes, he was completely disinterested in it and we easily kept him a safe distance from it.
We've already planned a camping trip with friends in September, but I'm hoping we'll get out to Pomona again as a family to enjoy another weekend of camping before then.
My DSLR is still out of commission, so I snapped all these with my iPhone camera.
The only ones in our loop for the night.
No water, no electricity.
Roughing it.
He loved looking out his window.
Being crazy, rolling around on our air mattress.
Brother, let me in!
There's my strong man splitting wood for the fire.
Taters and onions over the fire. Yum!
We had these for supper and breakfast the next morning.
Getting ready for bed.
My favorite photo to date with my boys.
Sitting with my honey watching the sun go down.
Night-night, Bear.
No. Really. Go to sleep.
S'more deliciousness.
Terrible photo with an iphone...but seriously a beautiful memory.
Gorgeous sunset, calm lake, fire crackling.
Morning!
Crashed on the way home.
We were all exhausted by the time we got everything packed up and Barrett's cold was in full force (and mine) so we went home and slept the afternoon off. It was an awesome birthday weekend. I am so glad we chose camping over the hotel. Can't wait to go again!
