Happy Halloween!

For the first time in my memory, this year there was a HUGE debate over the day that Halloween would be celebrated on. The problem was Halloween fell on a Sunday this year. There were two major concerns with this according to those involved in the debate. One, it was on Sunday (God's day), and two it was a school night.

So, here are my questions....

1. Hasn't this happened before? How did they handle it seven or eight years ago?

2. In my house, every day is God's day, so why does it matter if it falls on a Sunday?

3. Five out of every seven years Halloween falls on a school night....so why the debate now?

I mean really, do I just not remember the conversation before? Is this the first time we've had this problem in America? Our solution to the problem was to celebrate both nights. So, take that Halloween night debaters!

Weeks ago I began planning Gabe's costume. I started out thinking I would make him an adorable cupcake costume (it was quickly vetoed by everyone that saw the design, so I'll just have to hang on to the idea for when I have a girl). After that got shot down, I began scouring the Internet and found a picture of a candy corn costume. I thought it would be perfect. Cheap, easy to make, and best of all, easy to wear.

I purchased the fabric and hem tape and spent a couple of hours at Mom's one weekend making the costume. I carefully measured and did the math and after the tape had time to set, I tried on the costume to discover it was WAY too small. He looked like a beauty pageant contestant, in yellow, orange, and white fleece. I came back to B'ville, bought more fabric and this time used fabric glue instead of hem tape. It took a lot less time and held much better. And, on the second version I added velcro across the top so he could easily step in and out of the costume. Around the bottom, I fabric glued in some flexible electric cable to help the candy corn keep its shape.

Here is the final result....

The pins holding the fabric for the cable are still in it in this photo.

After Gabe woke up from nap, we got him dressed and delivered some salsa to our next door neighbor and she was kind enough to also treat Gabe with some candy.

My sweet candy corn.
"Cheese!"

Knock, knock!

"Trick or Treat!"

Yeah, this didn't end well...

After making our stop next door, we headed over to the Colonial housing addition. I have several teacher friends who live there and I was planning to make a stop at some  of their houses. We only made it to two. Gabe's stranger danger fright was out in full force. Our first stop was at the accounting/business law teacher's house followed directly by the librarian's house. Gabe was petrified at both. Although, at the librarian's house there was one very sweet little ten year old that noticed how scared Gabe was and took his mask off then turned around to his friend and said, "Hey, take your mask off." To which the boy replied, "Why should I?" And the first boy said, "Because he's scared (pointing to Gabe)." It was very sweet and I was surprised a boy of that age would be so aware of others.

Looking at the house ahead,
which happened to have a lot of big scary decorations.

"You're comin' right, Mommy?"

Carrying on, bravely.

After an unsuccessful try at Colonial Estates, we headed to Grandma Danel's house. Gabe scored big, ate some of the candy, and then spent the night, while Casey and I went to a Halloween party in our neighborhood.

Found a spider walking up the sidewalk....

Daddy, our hero, stomping it to death.

Trick or Treat Grandma!

Well, help yourself Gabe.

That's gonna be a sugar rush...and crash....

Happy Halloween from The Smith Family!

Hope you and yours were able to celebrate an evening of fun and festivity also!
